As CPA specializing in providing services to Non-profit organizations, I felt I'd better get, read, and study this book as it has other outstanding reviews. I'm currently only into Chapter 2 (I read the entire appendix first as suggested by the author) and the information and layout are remarkable and with the update, timely. For most of my clients there is no question, they will continue to use QuickBooks and the road to better bookkeeping will be one step at a time. These are the clients that will benefit the most from my purchase of this book and I will be recommending each of them purchase their own copy. The other undecided or willing to change clients may after reading chapter 1 of the book, will decide not to use QuickBooks at all. The first chapter is 12 pages of areas that QuickBooks falls short for Non-profit accounting. There are work arounds for most issues, but others require exporting the reports to Excel and then customizing the reports manually. So, in summary, the book is great; however, it may make you question your decision to use QuickBooks in the first place.
I teach vocational courses including accounting and QuickBooks. One of my students had the daunting job of fixing the accounting system that had been in use by the non-profit organization for whom she worked, that is international in scope. Over a period of about nine months and with the help of this book, we were able to set their books/accounts straight, and set up a system that provides for accurate non-profit accounting. No book can solve every problem in your unique situation. We also relied on accounting knowledge which is a separate study really from how to use Quickbooks software ... please take a basic accounting class! ... and googling for other tips on forums and so forth. None-the-less, we found some solutions to problems in this book that we did not see anywhere else.My student's accountants were so impressed by her QuickBooks company files (accounting system) that she is now traveling to all of their major cities to demonstrate the system to others and help them get their QuickBooks in similar order.
I'm not a CPA, but have been helping out small non-profit organizations for a long time, doing bookkeeping. I'm a long time user of for profit versions of QuickBooks and feel comfortable with a 990 form. However, the new nonprofit version of QuickBooks totally flummoxed me! I spent days surfing online for answers to the QuickBooks problems and finally broke down and contacted a QB Certified Advisor at a local CPA's office. Turns out she didn't even know that there was a separate nonprofit version and she couldn't solve my problems. That made me feel a little better, but I was still very frustrated and feeling as if my bookkeeping skills were not so hot. This book helped me regain my self-esteem. I got a big grin on my face every time the author said, "QuickBooks doesn't do this task right and here is how you can get around it." Whew! What a big help. I still have issues with QB that this book won't solve, but our situation (needing to do inventory too) is a bit different from most nonprofits. Otherwise, this book is very easy to understand and very helpful. I would definitely recommend it.
You probably wouldn't be reading this unless you're involved in accounting for nonprofits, either as a professional or as a volunteer, so in that context, . As an experienced accountant that uses QB exclusively and specializes in nonprofits, I needed a full and detailed QB user manual for reference, and an idea-starter for reformatting the books of a new nonprofit client. Paid for itself in time for designing financial statements, chart of accounts, and how to handle restricted funds.
Very helpful, I use QuickBooks for my for profit business, I am setting up bookkeeping for a non-profit I am associated with, and this book was very helpful, with setting up income and expense accounts, there are some differences, that need to be done that I was not aware of, to create reports for the Board members.
Too technical. Not good for a beginner, non-professional bookkeeper. Most small churches use untrained volunteers; this will not be helpful until you learn more.
A friend suggested this book. She is an accountant, I am not. I find the book very useful. The author strikes a balance between explanations that are too basic, and explanations which make many assumptions about the reader's understanding of accounting.I'm treasurer for a small non-profit using Quick Books, and between explanations from my friend, and reading Kathy Ivens's book, I'm coming to grips with the intricacies of accounting.
Extremely helpful in understanding what you can do and can't do with QuickBooks. I especially like the links from the index to the pages I need to answer any questions or problems I have run into. When doing a non profit's books it is easy to become relaxed and not pay attention to all the rules or even not be aware of the rules. Ms Ivens definitely educates and reminds one to be more proactive and safe. I would highly recommend.
